This native grape variety played a central role in Alto Adige viticulture until the 1970s and contributed to Alto Adige’s renown as a red wine region. As the grapes prefer the shade, we continue to train the Schiava vines along a pergola trellis system. The wines are characterised by freshness, light and rounded tannins and a moderate alcohol content.
Alois Lageder is a renowned winery located in the Alto Adige region of Italy, known for its commitment to biodynamic viticulture and sustainable practices. The Schiava varietal, also known as Vernatsch, is a light-bodied red wine that thrives in the cool climate of Alto Adige. This wine is crafted with minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the grape to shine. It offers a delicate bouquet of red berries, cherries, and floral notes, with a refreshing acidity and soft tannins. The wine is best enjoyed slightly chilled and pairs beautifully with light pasta dishes, charcuterie, and soft cheeses.
