J. Wilkes Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 2017
|Region||California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley|
The 2017 Pinot Noir is terrific. Bright red cherry, red plum, rose petal, lavender, blood orange and mint all jump from the glass in this racy, vivid Pinot Noir. Wonderfully pliant and inviting, this gorgeous, translucent Pinot has so much to offer. The purity of the flavors is just superb for a wine in this price range.
All destemmed and brought up 10 months in neutral barrels, the 2017 Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley from Wilkes offers a spicy bouquet of black cherries, ground herbs, spice box, and scorched earth. It has plenty of fruit, medium body, and rock-solid balance. This cuvée was all destemmed and spent 10 months in neutral oak.
Bright cherry and berry flavors are fashioned to fresh acidity in this rich, fruity style. Spicy accents emerge on the minerally finish. Drink now through 2023. 2,449 cases made.
Ripe strawberry, red-plum skins, carnation and turned earth make for an engaging nose on this bottling. The palate is taut but also a tad sour, with dried berry and more plum-skin flavors. It is still quite young, so the tartness may broaden and mellow with time.
