We've compiled a list of our favorite wines at all different price points. All wines are available in store or online.
Store owner, Sterling, enjoys a glass of Bodegas Avancia Cuvee de O Godello from Spain. Made with 100% Godello grapes, grown where the climate is Mediterranean, with an Atlantic Ocean influence. The 2014 vintage has a bright straw color with notes of ripe pear and white wild flowers. It's elegant enough to serve with a nice seafood dish, yet affordable enough to have as an every night wine. It's crisp with just a hint of almonds. The wine is clarified and slightly filtered, with silver hues.
Serving Suggestion: Serve alongside shrimp scampi
Sterling also recommends a red blend from California by Orin Swift Machete. Wine Spectator gives it 94 points for their 2014 vintage offering a mouthful of tannins, but also brimming with flavors and aromas, including Earl Gray tea, dark chocolate, dried violet and toasted gingerbread. Rich notes of plum and black cherry are balanced by forest floor and earthy accents, lingering on the long finish. Drink now through 2030.
Serving Suggestion: Serve alongside your favorite ribeye.
Rick, the store manager and primary wine buyer, has been with us for almost ten years. In searching for the best wines to bring to our store, Rick has sampled thousands of wines from all over the world. Here are two of his favorites:
Ancien Carneros has made a fantastic Chardonnay since 1992. Their 2013 vintage is sourced from two different vineyards within Carneros: one on the Napa side and the other from the Sonoma side. It is incredibly aromatic with notes of Fuji apple, lemon citrus, and a suggestion of white fig.
Serving Suggestion: Crab Cakes with a horseradish cream sauce.
Zenato Alanera Rosso from Italy is Rick's second recommendation and only 12,000 cases of their 2012 vintage were made. It has a lovely ruby color with a variety of aromas and flavors that include fresh and dried cherries, prunes, sweet spice, and hints of coffee. A red blend consisting of 55% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 10% Corvinone, 5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Serving Suggestion: Lamb Chops or a Shepherd’s Pie
Howard hosts our weekly wine tastings; he knows everyone and everyone knows him. He has been with Kona Wine Market since 1996, when it was located at the King Kamehameha Shopping Center. Howard also writes our weekly newsletters, so be sure to sign up for those. Howard enjoys a glass of Pinot Noir by Foxen Winery. His favorite vintage is 2014; Wine Enthusiast gave this vintage 91 points and only 4,000 cases were made. The wine displays bright red summer fruits such as cherries and strawberries. On the nose, you’ll get notes of cinnamon and clove. Enjoy the long finish and velvety texture.
Serving Suggestion: Pairs ideally with duck and other game birds. Also, pairs well with a casserole or a hearty stew.
Howard's second suggestion is a Rose wine from the Central Coast of California. Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare 2014 has all of the necessary qualities for a terrific pink wine — freshness, a hint of residual sugar, and a stoniness that many of the great French roses from Provence have. California is producing many top quality wines, and this is one of them, at a very affordable price. For under $20 it shows notes of fresh strawberries and citrus. Crisp and refreshing, perfect for a mid-day treat in the summer time.
Serving Suggestion: Try serving with appetizers such as hummus and olives. Also, goes great with a main dish, such as pizza.
Our go-to girl, Jacqui, has been a tremendous help to Kona Wine Market over the years. She’s always there when you need her and has a terrific eye for putting together our signature gift baskets. She recommends two terrific wines for any occasion:
An elegant Sauvignon Blanc Blend from Napa, California is one of her favorites. 2013 Tournesol Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is a very pale straw color with green hues, and aromas of zesty lemon-lime, lemongrass, fresh melon, and basil. Sweet citrus on the palate of ruby red grapefruit, starfruit, and yellow peach. This is a dry Sauvignon Blanc with bright acidity and a great body to match.
Serving Suggestion: Enjoy with a wide range of cheeses and charcuterie or match the freshness with sushi!
Another one of Jacqui's favorites is also from Napa, Sean Minors Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. His 2013 vintage has soft tannins and a lingering finish. Aromas of ripe blackberry and currants, with a mouth feel of mocha and black pepper.
Serving Suggestion: Serve with braised beef short ribs.
Our resident artist, Mouna, was born in Beirut, Lebanon and moved here in her twenties. She started with Kona Wine Market making our signature gift baskets. Leveraging her artistic background, Mouna now does all of our beautiful chalkboard art throughout the store. You can find her during our Friday tastings from 3pm-6pm. One of her favorite wines is a Chardonnay blend, vintage 2015, from Scaia winery from Italy; a classy blend of Garganega and Chardonnay. A pale straw color with green and silver hues. The nose is amazing with scents of citrus, pineapple, slight hint of lime, and even pecans. It’s semi-dry to dry and tastes of ripe stone fruit, such as peaches. Contains 12.5% alcohol and would make for a great wine for a nice dinner party.
Serving Suggestion: Aperitifs, starters with fish or a vegetable risotto.
See you in the store!
A Hui Hou!
